That was fast! Chapter VIII is done!

Coast of Melash

Fast is probably a relative term, but compared to the snail’s pace I took with Chapter VII, Chapter VIII almost clawed its way onto the screen! I’ve “discovered” some interesting details while I was writing Chapter VIII. I’m not sure I should say much else!

It’s been fun, getting back into the swing of things with Between the Lion and the Wolf, and as get closer to wrapping up Part I, I’m excited to see how Part II takes shape! As always, I have rough ideas of where things need to end up, and I think I know to get there, but we’ll see! In the meantime, here’s a brief passage from Chapter VIII:

“He’s—it just ate him!” he protested as though Zhalera hadn’t been there, too.

“I know! And it almost ate you, too! Now c’mon! Stay sharp!” She helped Kalas to his feet, picked up her sword, and noticed the eru as she turned around.

“Abarandal! What are you doing out here?! Get back—!”

Sensing, perhaps, the distant similarities in their shared composition, the troll abandoned its focus on its human targets and shifted toward the otherworldly girl with shimmering skin. Flexing its thick fingers a time or two, it reached for her: as one, Kalas and Zhalera screamed a warning that came too late. Time seemed to stretch—through no magic of the Song this time—as the troll’s plated hand wrapped around her tiny frame. When she disappeared within its grasp, Kalas realized she’d been glowing: now, not even the stars’ frail light seemed capable of blunting the dark.

Excerpted from Between the Lion and the Wolf, Chapter VIII.3

I hope the above passage piques your interest! It’s from roughly the middle of the chapter. The end of Chapter VIII sets up Chapter IX quite well, and I’m looking forwarding to writing it!

Reminder: Guilford Memorial Library’s Maine Author Day

I mentioned it in my previous post, and I’ll probably mention it every post until after the event: August 4, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Guilford Memorial Library is hosting a Maine Author Day, and I’ll be there. I hope you will be, too! I’d love to hear people’s thoughts about what they think about Beneath the Vault of Stars (BVS) as a whole, the characters, the setting, etc. I know I’m looking forward to it, and I hope you are, too!

T-shirts available on Amazon!

I don’t imagine there’s a huge market for them, but as I’ve mentioned in other posts, part of my “outlining” process involves creating some auxiliary information. Most of it will probably never see the light of day, but some of it will—assuming anyone buys one of The Daybringer T-shirts I’ve designed! I apologize for the shameless self-promotion! No, really! That said, below are a few images of what’s currently available on Amazon:

Ïsriba T-shirt
The “Hunter Bird” of Ïsriba. You’ve seen this design before! At least in part! The variant available on Amazon differs ever-so-slightly from the prototype I had made a while back.
Great Swath T-shirt
The “Great Swath.” If you’ve read through all my posts on BlakeGoulette.com, you’ve come across this design before! You might not have known what it meant. Maybe you still don’t! It’s mentioned in BVS: the later chapters of that book might provide a little insight if you’re still scratching your head…
Gambarad T-shirt
The “Iron Bear” of Gambarad. Another kingdom! If you’ve read BVS, you’ve heard mention—and nothing else!—of Gambarad. Now you know this kingdom is represented by the Iron Bear! (You’ve seen a brief glimpse of the character set I created for the language spoken in the book: designing a block version was surprisingly difficult!)

If you read and enjoyed BVS—or if you haven’t but like these designs anyway—consider springing for one! Each T-shirt is $19.99. My primary goal in putting these designs on Amazon is to build awareness for The Daybringer, but even if no one buys a shirt, I’ll continue to build a backlog of supplemental history as part of my outlining process! If you’re not interested in purchasing a T-shirt (and even if you are!), if you’ve read BVS, please consider writing a review and share your thoughts with others!

Thanks for bearing with me! With Chapter VIII out of the way, Chapter IX is waiting!

Update (2020-05-13): These shirts are no longer available on Amazon. Or anywhere! And that’s okay! I need to make some tweaks to the graphics anyway. I may or may not reintroduce them later.
