Progress on Between the Lion and the Wolf

Elemental arm

There’s no way around it: progress on Between the Lion and the Wolf (BLW) has been…slow. I think I wrote chapters I through VI in less time than it took to write chapter VII. (I could check, but I don’t want to depress myself!) That said, I’ve finally—finally!—finished chapter VII!

Part of the “problem” stems from recent events regarding my day job. For roughly ten years, I had the privilege of working from home. For the last couple of months, that privilege has been rescinded! Actually being at “the office” isn’t the worst thing in the world (I do work with some great people), but the commute…Wow. Granted, it’s trivial compared to some people’s, but when “traffic” used to consist of a rambunctious 5-year-old intent on explaining his latest Lego creation or an 11-year-old detailing the latest glitch he’s discovered in some game or another, forty-five to ninety minutes seems like a long time.

That said, here’s a brief quote from somewhere in chapter VII:

The older pilgrim presented him with a low bow; the younger offered him a slight nod, but before the pair was out of earshot, he turned and muttered something both menacing and indiscernible. Without looking back, his companion placed a hand on his shoulder and whispered something to the younger man: as he listened, his eyes widened, his head whipped forward, and his pace quickened.

Once they disappeared around a bend in the road, Shosafin sheathed his sword.

“What was—?” Kalas began. The soldier interrupted him: “They’re lying,” he spat.

Excerpted from Between the Lion and the Wolf, Chapter VII.2

I’m reasonably happy with chapter VII. It’s quite possible—probable, even—that I’ll tweak it (and all the other chapters) between now and…whenever, but it’s “finished” for now! Next up is chapter VIII, and I’ve already made decent progress on it (relatively speaking). I know where chapter X needs to end, and I have a handful of ideas that have to occur throughout chapters VIII and IX: the trick, as always, is blending away the gaps between those ideas.

I know it’s been a while since I’ve added anything here, but given my lack of progress, it seemed a moot point. I’m hopeful I can find time to build up some momentum and get chapters VIII through XX finished before the year is through. That’s my goal for BLW, and I’m pretty sure I can reach it…

Maine Author Day at the Guilford Memorial Library

Oh! One more thing! The Guilford Memorial Library in Guilford, Maine, is having a Maine Author Day on Saturday, August 4, 2018, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and I’ve been invited to attend! It’s been years—decades, maybe—since I’ve set foot inside its brick walls. And while it’s true I live in North Carolina now, I have fond memories of walking to the library every week to check out a new book. If you’ll be in Guilford on August 4, come say hello!
